After floods or other disasters, law and order can break down. There may be an increase in criminal behaviour, including sexual abuse. During a disaster, people become dependent on others for survival and are more vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse.
What can you do?
- Humanitarian aid is free! No one has the right to touch you or demand any sexual favours from you in return to it.
- If you feel you have been mistreated, you have the right to complain.
- You have a right to know what aid you are supposed to be receiving.
- If someone tells you they have been hurt or abused, let them know that you believe them. Help them get the services they need, especially health services.
